This is a tribute to my best friend Nancy. I am keeping my promise.
It’s been two years now Nancy, since you looked me in the eye and said, “Don’t let my heart stop beating.”
You left your body shortly after, in your time and in your way. You sent us all on our way with the assurance you would be fine.
I remember the moment as if it were today. Surrounded by family, determined to let every single person in your family rise to their greatness, before you rose to yours. It was a beautiful miracle. It was filled with the deepest of grief and the greatness of joy. But you did it, Nancy.
You knew I loved a mission and I would show up in dedicated vigor to complete that which you set me out to do. And yet Nancy, it is really you that has kept your heart beating, isn’t it?
It’s you that whispers in the ear of your grandson, and he listens with the innocence of one not tainted by the hardness of life. It’s you that keeps the family gathered around the table in the kitchen, created by you. It’s you that keeps your family and friends forever remembering, forever gathering, forever living pure love. It’s you that is constantly giving us the most amazing signs to help us know you are still around. We see them Nance. We hear them.
So Nancy, I want you to know, I continue on the mission you gave me. It is not easy, but it is not hard. Most days I spend with you, and our life together. Then there will be a moment when I remember you are not here. A tear will trickle down my cheek. I place a hand on my heart, and feel the pure love you shared so beautifully. A smile comes back.
Don’t worry Nancy, still on the mission.
Your heart will never stop beating. Pure love never dies.
